D.H. Lawrence(1885-1930) is one of the most important writers in the history of English literature, and , perhaps , the greatest from a working-class family. During his life-long literary career, he wrote more than ten novels, several volumes of short stories and a large number of poems, prose and critic essays. Some of his novels aroused great controversy and were only available in expurgated versions when they were first published in England. His works have been regarded as both imaginative and perceptive. His ideas and description of sexual love cause a strong earthquake in the world of literature. His works are received with high praise and furious criticism at the same time, and he suffered for it in his lifetime.Lawrence expresses a passionate love for nature and the countryside of England in his works. Under his pen nature takes on some kind of special meaning which is different from other writers of his time. In the whole process of creative writing, the vivid contrast between the beautiful nature and badly-polluted industrial zones constitutes the grand background for his works. My thesis will focus on the role that nature plays in Lawrence's works and his unique understanding of the relationship between nature and human beings. Through an analysis of the symbolic use of nature in his novels, especially in The Rainbow, I try to demonstrate how, with the help of two kinds of symbols, structural ones and narrative ones, Lawrence explores, exposes and depicts his characters'unconsciousness and how the use of these two kinds of natural symbols in his worksmakes Lawrence distinguished from his precedents and become a modernist writer.
