On The Literary Achievements Of Fan Zhongyan

This thesis conducts an exploration of Fan Zhongyan's literary achievements through his fu, poetry and other styles of literary works instead of his most concerned hot points, such as ci, or Yueyang Pavilion.Chapter One first gives a brief introduction of Fan 's life, which sets the foundation to study his works. Then several pieces of writing are listed form the record, annals, collections and selections through the history so as to provide a complete picture of his literary creation. Chapter Two groups Fan 's literary thoughts into Five points:" Complementarity of content & form", "Dualism of Writing & Way", "Stylistics", "Theory of Qi in literature"and"Theory of Form". It particularly, Focuses upon the thought of "Complementarity of content & form ",as well as its importance in the literature development in Song Dynasty.Chapter Three deals with Fan's regulated fu which are studied in three aspeds :"Quantity" , "Range", and "Depth", so as to generalize his exploration in the contnt of fu. Then the author expends Fan's strong ability in literary skills and his frequent innovations through the techniques used in his works. Such as ,theme statement, rhyming, polishing sentences and illuding Apart form these ,it briefed the interaction between fu and other styles of writing. Finally it draws out Fan Zhongyan's contribution of regulated fu. Chapter Four focuses on "Clarity-oriented" and illustrates Fan's aesthetic standard of "Clarity-oriented beauty" and the position of his poems among the poetry in Song Dynasty.Chapter Five raises the discussion on fan's proses :Essays are characterized with "fu-oriented writing", and prefaces are characterized with "Human being Oriented"; Tablet-inscribed records aim at praising the achievements of the dead, and correspondences are featured with "truelove and genuine concern".The last chapter values the influence of Fan's literary creation upon the later generation, stressing on the spreading , research, and study of his works.
