Susanne k. Langer (1895-1985) was a well-known femal contemporary philosopher aesthetist, was a chief representive of symbolism and was a very famous person in American academic circles. Symbolism is a chief scool of contemporary thoughts, which was thrived during 50"s of 20 century and was reduced gradually during 60's and 70's of 20 century. However it still has important effects on contemporary and modern art schools.Absorbing and accepping the other schools' merts is the main and obvious character of Langer's theory. She inherited her teacher E-Cassirer's human-culture symbolism thoughts, criticized and absorbed Collingwood's thoughts and thought highly of Bell's thoughts. In the end, Langer thought that the Art form was a kind of expressional form and living form also.On the base of critizing and absorbing the other 's theories and on the philosophy base of symbolism Langer posed the wholly - new concept of Art, that is, art was the creation of symbolism form of human feeelings. Then Langer thought that art is a feeling symbol. As far as it's expressional character was concerned, Langer thought that art was composed by Illusions, which was the main logical thought of Langer 's Aesthetic symbolism. The concept about art is the base and the core of Langer 's whole theories about art. The thesis mainly explores the concept , mainly analyzes the notions , such as symbol , illusion , feeling , form , that the concept referred to and instructs its important value on the history of art thoughts . In the part of conclusion also instructs the defects of the concept, which will do some good to comprehend it exactly and also do some good to coprehend the whole thoughts of Langer.
