From Function To Sign--The Sign Characteristic Of Industrial Design

This thesis studies product on the principles of Semiologie, and views Industrail Design as a "symbolic system " . As Semiological research is partially on the base of linguistics , the method of this study mainly depends on the comparison between the spoken language and Industrail Design, revealing the differences between the two symbolic systems and ascertaining characteristics of Industrail Design.This thesis confines itself to the spectrum of Syntactics which studies the relations between different symbols, analyzes the constructional nature of signifiant and the basal earmarks of Industrail Design. And then by the explanation of the notions langue and parole, the paper points out that the Industrail Design as a "language" is a special code system instead of a integrate system. The last part of the article detailedly discusses the articulation traits of the special code system.The theory sources of this thesis come from two parts : one is of Semiologie by R.Barthes , which provides the basal conceptions about Industrail Design, the other is of Semiologie on movie studies by Ch.Metz, P.Wollen and U.Eco, which contributes to the discoveries of the articulation traits of the special code system.
