Text teaching is always one difficulty in the course of teaching Chinese as asecond language. Based on the theory of text cohesion, this paper makes an analysison the texts written by Indonesian students of elementary and intermediate level ofChinese by means of error–analysis.Chapter one briefly introduces the topic and research method of this paper, andputs emphasis on the generalization of the current situation and research results of textteaching in teaching Chinese as a second language. Chapter two presents theviewpoints about the theory of text analysis claimed by M. A. K. Halliday, HuZhuanglin and other representatives, and makes an example analysis in terms ofgrammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. Chapter three investigates the cohesiveerrors in texts written by students in Medan, Indonesia. The paper further discussesthe causes of these cohesive errors, and attempts to reduce them into five types:negative transfer of mother tongue, influence of target language, deficiency in thearrangement of textbooks, impacts of teacher’s teaching methods, and the use ofavoidance strategy. Chapter four proposes some teaching suggestions to help improvethe effects in text teaching from the aspects of the compilation of textbook, thecomparative study of Chinese and Indonesian, and the methods in text teaching.
