On Frankfurt School Of Thought And Chinese Mass Culture Research

The origin of the modern concept of Mass culture is from the west. In this article mass culture refers to the culture that is based on social large scale production, via modern technology and media, to copy and consume in a large scale. With the social development and technology improvement, mass culture has become the most dynamic and influential culture, and also one of the most important ways to research the transition of Chinese culture. As the primary judgment analysis of Chinese mass culture, this article, based on Chinese language environment, through the historic judgment and assessment on the popularity of Frankfurt school of thought, studys the influence of Frankfurt school on Chinese temporary mass culture and its inner logic; and also with special attention on the spatiality and complexity of Chinese mass culture; This article discusses the way to get independence of the affiliation to western theories in global and post-colony language environment, and to build original and up-to-date Chinese mass culture theory structure.This article is comprised of four parts. In the first Part, it gives the definition of mass culture and points out the source of mass culture and its historic importance to human culture. Meanwhile it analyses the development of Chinese mass culture. With the borderline of the built-up of 90's market economic system, this article divides Chinese mass culture into two periods and emphases the special characteristics of Chinese mass culture in different periods.In Part Two, this article studies the current status of Chinese mass culture and points out the influence of Frankfurt social critical theory on the way of Chinese scholars researching Chinese mass culture. Therefore, it is a must to have scholaristic critic and self-reflection on this Chinese mass culture source and ways of copying research method of Frankfurt school. As one of the most important Western Maxism, Frankfurt has its special historic background and huge theory structure and special research ways. Among which, the main historic task and the theory characteristics are to criticize Capitalism. The researches of Adorno Lowenthal Benjamin and Marcuse comprises the main content of Frankfurt school. To liberate thoughts and relearn Maxism, from 1980's, Frankfurt school of thought was gradually translated, introduced and studied. And this is the coincidence with the development background of Chinese mass culture.In Part Three, this article emphasis on four directions to study the influence and inner logic of Frankfurt school. Culture Industry and Culture Industry mainly discusses the most important concept of Frankfurt school-Culture Industry. And this relates with different culture background and period of China and the west, especially in Frankfurt Culture Industry to Culture Industry in China, the meaning of the concept changing and theory deformation. Mass media in the age of mechanical reproduction is to provide the different opinions on the most important carrier of mass culture-the media, from the introduction of the famousargumentation of Benjamin and Adorno,and also clarify the basic opinion of Chinese mass culture on this point and analysis the product and its system characteristics . Who are the mass explains the composition of the mass and people's social position and historic task, especially about the social classes related with people in Chinese mass culture; through the transfer of the focus of western culture and the critics of Frankfurt School, it points out that the study on Mass culture must pay attention to the importance of people acting as consumers in Mass culture and also the active function in communication and production.
