Catiline' s conspiracy happened at the end of Roman Republic period. It was the definite result of the deterioration of all kinds of social contradiction, and it had direct relation with Roman clique struggle and brought about great effect on Roman social history.This essay aims to illustrate the interrelationship between the conspiracy and Roman clique struggle and discover the tendency of the Roman Republic collapse.The essay can be divided into the foreword and the main body.The foreword first explains the conspiracy' s nature and its close connection with the Roman Republic clique struggle, and notes that conspiracy foreshadowed the tendency of the Roman Republic collapse. Next, it summarizes the research into Catiline' s conspiracy at domestic and abroad.The main body can be divided into three parts.The first part is about the clique struggle in the end of Roman Republic with the birth of Catiline' s conspiracy, which mainly analyses the reasons of the conspiracy .The second part aims at exploring the reasons of the conspiracy' s failure including subjective and objectivefactors, such as Catiline cabal fell short of military force; this conspiracy had been exposed too early; the plans of Catiline were so radical that he lost support from Crassus and Caesar .The third part illustrates the conspiracy' s great effect on Roman society. For one thing, it made roman dominant group adjusted the strategy of Roman Republic struggle, and led to the temporary unity of Roman military oligarch .For another, it played an important role in Caesar' s dictatorship. More importantly, the conspiracy' s breakout foreshadowed theobjective tendency of the Roman Republic collapse.The corrupt Roman Republic had come to an end in the 1stcentury BC. The conspiracy established a foundation for theimpending bigger social innovations-Caesar' s dictatorshipand Augustus' s imperialism.
