The Catiline's conspiracy is generally a collective term for a series of political events that took place in late Roman Republic(66-62 BC),with the main incident of the plan of Catiline to murder the consul in 63 BC.At that time, the turbulent atmosphere of the 60 s caused by the social, economic and political background of Rome was closely related to these events. After the fall of Carthage in 146 BC,Rome established the hegemony of Mediterranean, there were many uncontrollable violent factors inside, the most important being the persistent poverty of the peasants and the struggle within the privileged class. At the time of Pompey's departure from Rome in the 60 s,any turmoil could have caused disaster.Catiline embarked on the path of destroying Rome under the impetus of many forces. However,at the beginning of the plan to destroy Rome, the consul Cicero publicly revealed the conspiracy, and the conspirators in Rome were arrested and sentenced to death.Catiline and his army were annihilated, and his plot ended in failure.Catiline is the victim of the times. He reflects the life of the upper class of Rome in the late Republic, that is,to do everything for himself, and that there is no long-lasting ally and only eternal interests. This is a failed coup that was planned by thedissidents.Although it was only an episode in the history of Rome,it had became far-reaching because of the major figures involved in this event and accelerated the decline of the Republic. The people involved in the Catiline's conspiracy cover all segments of the Roman society. The wide range of faces shows that everyone expected to get what they want in the chaos, and the Senate had no power to control Rome.At that time, the foundation of the Roman Republic had been shaken, and its upper building would fall in the end.
