This paper reports on a tentative study of the application of the Communicative Approach to the teaching of writing for English majors. Language is viewed for communication from the communicative point of view. Under the guidance of the theories and principles of the communicative approach, an experiment was carried out in a class of the English Department at Chenzhou Teacher's College to test the effectiveness of the communicative approach in the teaching of writing. The data gained from the experiment were analyzed through the SPSS 10.0 statistical analysis system. It was found that the communicative approach could arouse the interest of the subjects in English writing and that this approach was more effective than the traditional approach.This paper consists of five chapters. Chapter One begins the topic by the introduction of the importance of the teaching of writing and the significance of applying the communicative language teaching to the teaching of English writing. Chapter Two reviews the theories and principles of the communicative approach as well as its development. Chapter Three designs how to carry out the experiment. Chapter Four discusses the results of the experiment. The last chapter draws a conclusion of the experiment.
