Ideological Manipulation In The Adoption Of Domestication In Film Subtitle Translation Of Walt Disney's Mulan

This thesis makes an attempt to examine the relationship between ideology and the translation strategy of domestication in the rendition of film subtitling from English to Chinese. Domestication, the strategy preferred in film subtitle translation, is governed by ideology implicitly. Disney animated film Mulan is used as a major case study. The film achieved global success, but when it was released in China, it aroused controversy although welcomed by the audience because of Americanization in the film. Therefore, the subtitle translation of this film deserves investigation.This study gives a close textual analysis of Mulan to see how and to what extent domestication strategy is employed in terms of language and style. The focus is put on ideological manipulation, which contributes to the preference of the domestication strategy. The exploration is drawn from two aspects-official ideology and mass ideology in China. The relation between official ideology and mass ideology is examined. In the commercial films, mass ideology plays a major role. We discuss why and how government ideology exerts an influence on the adoption of domestication strategy. Meanwhile we analyze the impact of mass ideology on this strategy.In the area of film subtitle translation, ideological manipulation is easily marginalized. The thesis writer hopes more attention is drawn to the influence of mass ideology on the subtitle translation of commercial films, which is exactly the significance of the present study lies.
