On Comparison Of Chinese Subtitling Of The Big Ban Theory From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

The rise of the Internet has brought the second revolution of translation,which gives rise to folk translation on the net,and even pushes its great expanding into fashion.At the same time,subtitling,the most influential part of the online translation,involves a wide range of translation objects,such as the popular cultural products and cultural courses in Europe and the United States.In this paper,based on the Skopos Theory,the author tries to explore the factors that influence the translation strategies of the translator in order to summarize the standards which should be followed in the sitcom subtitling process through the comparative study of the Chinese subtitling of two versions of The Big Bang Theory on YYets web and YDY web.In this thesis,the definition of functionalist translation,the background and the objectives and significance of research,as well as the development and the research status of Skopos theory,have been introduced,which lay the theoretical foundation for the whole research.Meanwhile,the author presents the definition of subtitling and its categories and sums up the researches related to the history of subtitling at home and abroad.60 English major students in Xi'an Technological University were selected in questionnaire survey so as to investigate the popularity and favorability of the subtitling of The Big Bang Theory on YYets web and YDY web respectively.2653 text corpus in the subtitling of Season 1 of The Big Bang Theory were collected and 2357 text corpus was selected and used for analysis according to the language characteritics of sitcom.With the orientation of Skopos theory,the author analyses the translation of buzzwords,humor and the application of domestication and foreignization in the two versions so as to fufill the study on the comparison of subtitling of the two versions.According to the three principles of Skopos theory-skopos,coherence and fidelity,the author finds that the team of subtitling will choose different kind of translation strategies according to their individual translation style.In order to fulfill the task of translation,they will frequently employ the strategies of domestication and foreignization as well as distinguished methods.Meanwhile,they would like to use net-words,slangs and idioms to achieve vividness and humorousness of subtitling,so that the audience can realize and understand the laughing points quickly in the sitcoms.
