Zhao Shuli, a controversial writer, had made an unique contribution to the history of modern Chinese literature. The long study of him, which now overestimates him, now underestimates him, tends to diverge from the revelation of his genuine worth. In view of this situation, this paper attempts to display the true features of Zhao, and thus to approach his genuine values, namely, his pursuit of a noble personality, and his thought and writing out of responsibility and conscience. This paper first traces Zhao Shuli's hard unusual life experience from the lowest social class to the higher ones, and his unique field of literary vision. Following the first part is a discussion of the contradiction and conflict manifested in his literary writings. Finally, the article makes an analysis of the values of his sincerity behind the contradiction and conflict.
