(1) Hong Xiao is a rather characterized and accomplished female writer. Her classical novel: "The story of Hu-lan River" is the embodiment of her aesthetics and artistic achievements, which is mainly including style development and unique narrative pattern in lyric novels. (2)In the aspect of style development, departing from the traditional formula of plots, structures and characters which are the main components of a novel, "The story of Hu-lan River" favours fully subjective individual feeling, which directs the whole novel and integrates all the materials in the text. Which the lyric narrative instead of the time and process one, this novel understates greatly the plots, one of the lifelines in traditional novels, so as to weaken the narrative function of the text and strengthen the lyric function which is made in a leading position in the novel. In order to support the luric function of the text in the leading position, Hong Xiao deals skillfully with the language according to her own artist understanding and command. Her wording is always not grammatical, which finds expression in "beauty" full of tender and deep feeling. While she writes in a simple and frank style with plenty of quotation of spoken language, she pays attention to the language rhythm. (3)In the construction of narrative pattern. Hong Xiao brings forth a new idea that is to make good creative material of rich childhood events with feeling. She chooses a small town as the object of the story instead of the characters who are generally regarded as the principal case in a novel. Meanwhile, she establishs a narrative structure which is from outside to inside, bearing great life tension and full of philosophical meaning, as well as integrating the innocent and clear children viewpoint, the objective and rational adult viewpoint and profound and exquisite female viewpoint, all of which bring up the narrative of modern significance in "The story of Hu-Lan river".
