A Study On The Evolution Of The Sentence-final Lai(Laizhe)

The sentence-final laizhe which originated from the sentence-final lai in Chinese and Early Mandarin is active in modern Chinese Mandarin. The paper mainly examines the historical evolution of the sentence-final lai(laizhe)so as to find the implicated regularity.The main part of the paper is divided into several chapters according to Chinese history, including Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming , Qing dynasty and modern Chinese. We classify on all the sentence-final lai(laizhe) of every period , summarizing its grammatical function and observe its evolution by comparing the earlier stage with the later one. At the same time we conjecture the reason why lai developed to laizhe. Along with the changing of ages and the development of language, the sentence-final lai gradually withdrawed the history stage, just reserved in the dialect. Laizhe replaced lai, but its using became simple. Basing on the experience aspect laizhe also developed out new meanings and its meanings become empty.
