Learning Colloquial Expression: Situation Comedy As A New Resource

Colloquial expression is an important property of spoken English. Many reasons have led to the fact that colloquial expression has been spared little attention in academic field and traditional EFL classrooms. On the other hand, learners who have realized this lack and turn to dictionaries and reference books after class are only deterred by having to memorize so many entries without ever meeting them in daily life. Naturally finding a new resource and an effective method to help EFL learner to master colloquial expression becomes the focus of this thesis. Based on the analysis of colloquial expression's characteristics, this study suggests original situation comedy as feasible material after an examination and comparison of situation comedy's features and its availability in China. Furthermore EFL learner's realization of colloquial expression and their actual use of original English films were collected through questionnaire. In order to solve this large quantity input low intake problem, this thesis also investigates the interaction between learners, teachers and materials through teaching practice to provide experiences and practical suggestions for the application ofsituation comedy into the classroom teaching of colloquial expression.
