A Report On The Last Winter Rehearsal Interpreting Project

Nowadays, the communication between China and other countries extends to a larger scale and is more relevant to people's everyday life. There are an increasing number of collaborative projects between China and other countries, like co-produced TV shows or plays. Interpreters serve as a bridge in these communication activities.From August 29th to September 7th in 2016, the reporter worked as an interpreter for the play The Last Winter. Her main job was to interpret for the English directors and performer as well as Chinese performers. The particularity of the project was that during the rehearsal there was no script, which means that every word the performers said were impromptu and the majority of those expressions were colloquial. This brought some new challenges to the reporter's interpreting, especially Chinese-English interpreting. Because in impromptu and colloquial Chinese expressions, there are often problems like grammar disorder, information redundancy, staggering, hesitation and vulgarness. The problems the reporter encountered were mainly concerned with culture-loaded words, colloquialism as well as word disorder and redundancy. After this project, the reporter analyzed her recording and summarized the problems accordingly.To solve these problems, the reporter has read extensively about the Interpretive Theory and used it as the theoretical foundation to bring forward some interpreting strategies which include paraphrasing, simplification and omission, explanation as well as sentence restructuring. By summarizing these problems and strategies, this report provides reference and examples to the study of the interpreting of impromptu and colloquial expressions.
