The main material of the thesis under research come from "A Collection of Ci Found in DunhuangCavern"(《敦煌歌辞总编》), a book famous for the biggest amount of collection and the most giganticstructure, which was compiled by Mr. Bantang Ren. Comparison is adopted as the best method to analysizethe rhyming of the book.. At first, comparing the paragraghs of the same rhyme arrangement with eachother to find the subtle differences among them, then summarizing the rule and making sure what rhyme itobeys. Secondly, listing the rhyming characters and calculating the rhyming times to see the rates ofco-rhyme to summarize the rhyming category. In this reseach, the sound system of Guangyun(《广韵》), arhyme book of Song Dynasty, and other material about sound of the same age such as the rhyming ofpoems of Tang Dynasty and the following Five succeeding Dynasties in North China are introduced tomake a comparision. After a close study to 1380 times of rhyming which occure in the selected 1169 piece of Ci, the resultscan be illustrated as below: 1. According to the norm of rhyming characters, the rhyme occurred in the collection can be dividedinto six types: the sweet tone(平韵), the stiff tone(仄韵), the mixure of the above two(平仄韵兼备),the simple transition of the above two(平仄韵转换), the complicated transition of the above two(平仄韵交错)and the co-rhyme of the above two (平仄韵通押)rhyming characters. 2. The 20 rhyming categories occurred in the collection bear similarity to the 23 rhyming categoriessummarized by Mr. Zhumo Zhou in his thesis "The North Sound in Tang Dynasty and the following Fivesucceeding Dynasties in North China" except that shenshe(深摄)ji category (缉部)of stop endings(入声)is absent and Zengshe(曾摄) along with its stop endings are merged to Gengshe(梗摄)。 3. Most of the important phonetic transition occurred in this book such as characters of "jia 佳"rhymecategory occurred in Guangyun merged to "ma 麻"rhyme category, characters of "qi 齐"and "jifei 祭废"rhyme category to"zhiwei 支微"rhyme category, the distribution of stop endings to other three tones and soon.. 4. The way of rhyming in the book under research show more similarities to that of Tang Dynasty in thelate and the4 following Five succeeding Dynasties in North China than other period of the same age thoughsome important phonetic phenomenen originate early to Tang Dynasty in his boom. Still, some dialectsounds of north-west China are found in the book due to its folklore nature. Still more, some old phoneticspell remains in the rhyming of the Ci found in Dunhuang cavern ,for example, characters of "xiao 宵"and"yu 鱼" rhyme category can be used as a substitution for "qin 侵" and "dong 东" rhyme category Divided into seven chapters, this thesis contains six thousand characters. The first chapter emerged aspreface which include a brief discussion of preceeding studies, the sources and methods of this research. The second chapter present twenty rhyme categories along with the charcters belonging to each category. And some important characters are also discussed. In this chapter. The third chapter deals with he yun, themerging of rhyme categories and some of the phonetic problem occurred in Tang Dynasty and thefollowing Five succeeding Dynasties in North Chair. During this research, some relevant phonetic materialatthis same age made by a few phoneticions like Mr.Changpei Luo, Mr.Hui Long and so on are introducedto make a comparision to see in what degree the phonetic transion had occurred. The fourth chapter is asummary of the rythme based on a close study to the 1169 piece of ci selected from the book. The resultshows that according to the norm of rythming characters, it can be divided into seven type.
