This thesis compares the English poet, John Donne with the Chinese poet, Li Shangyin by means of parallel approach of comparative literature from the perspective of historicism. In spite of their different cultures and ages, this thesis argues that they are comparable in terms of backgrounds and personal experiences and artistic characteristics. We conclude that the similar backgrounds and experiences lead, partly if not completely, to a tendency in which they would share analogous artistic characteristics. The comparison is significant in that it can enhance the understanding of the similarities and differences presented by different traditions and cultures. The comparison itself proves that the parallel approach can be well applied to comparative literature between English and Chinese poetry. And undoubtedly, the comparison will supply us with an effective access to further understanding, and to an objective comment on and critical appreciation of their poetry. Also, a primary probe into the possibility of penetrating influence between British and Chinese poetry is made.
