The Wei dynasty and Jin dynasty are very important for the study of the development of Chinese language. The Buddhist sutras have special values for this kind of study. This thesis chooses five sutras which were translated by Jiumoluoshi(鸠 摩罗什) as the inquiring materials and tries to do some researches on the polysyllabic words in these five sutras. These five sutras are the Diamond Sutra(金刚经), the Lotus Sutra( 妙法莲华经), the Vimalakirti-Nivdesa Sutra(维摩诘所说经), the Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra(小品般若波罗蜜经) and Da zhuangyan lun jing(大庄严论经)This thesis consists of two parts. The first part is trying to find out the rules by which the polysyllabic words formed. The second part is aiming at the study of the development of words' meaning. We hope that these studies could make some contributions to the construction of the history of Chinese lexicon.
