The gate of the Academy- dominated Salon opened to every artist, no matter he belonged or not to the Academy, after the Revolution in France. Therefore, the art market became more flourishing, with more and more people getting involved. The 1848 revolutions were followed by not only an unsteady political situation, but the rapid progress in industry and science, which also influenced the tendencies of art. This thesis places the focus on exhibitions, mainly official Salons, and art reviews in France at that period, in order to silhouette the interactive relationship between artists, critics, art market and the public. The documents of the time are drawn in order to construct a historical context, in which an attempt has been made to let readers see more clearly how those exhibitions and criticism affect the public's taste, and in return, what changes artists made in their creative work with a view to satisfying the jury and the public. However, the main purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the important role of art exhibitions and critics in modern world.
