Modern linguistics is a discipline which uses modern linguistic theory and approach to make a study of language style in use. Discourse analysis and stylistics have been combined and formed a tendency to study discourse stylistics in the application of systemic functional theory. The thesis gives a generalization of development, object and definition of stylistics. The writer makes a detail exploration of semantic structure between elements of which narration and monologue consist through some chapters of the novel JANE EYRE, using functional frame and descriptive approach of language with multi-levels. The writer focuses on three aspects for the novel. With the work being information, the content of the novel corresponds to ideational function which is realized by transitivity. With the work being textual function, it corresponds with textual function which is realized by theme-rheme progression and cohesive system. With the work being discourse, it corresponds with interpersonal function, which is realized modality and mood. Meanwhile, the higher level 'context' is also used to analyze this story to have a deeper understanding of the literary work. The thesis is a tentative effort to understand and appreciate the novel "Jane Eyre" from a new perspective and it will hopefully contribute to a better appreciation of literary texts.
