The Application Of Functional Stylistics In Chinese-English SI

Functional Stylistics is short for "Systemic Functional Stylistics",referring to the stylistics based on the systemic functional linguistics study of Halliday.He publicly read a very influential paper entitled "Linguistic Function and Literary Style" in the stylistics symposium held in Italy in 1969,with the inclusion that languages had three metafunctions,which are ideational metafunctions,interpersonal metafunctions and textual metafunctions.Ever since then,a growing number of scholars began to use the theory into interdisciplinary studies.Thus,functional stylistics came to fore.There is an increase in research by means of applying the theory of functional stylistics to translation studies.However,many scholars mainly adopted this theory to the study of literature translation rather than that of external propaganda discourse.The report here is a tentative study of applying the three metafunctions to analyze external propaganda discourse and enhance corresponding interpreting.The analysis of this report is guided by Halliday's functional stylistics to find its presentations of three metafucntions in typical features which are accuracy,purposiveness and epochal character of the external propaganda discourse of this practise comprehensively.The analysis mainly focuses on lexical layers,tense layers and rhetorical devices so as to present the application of ideational functions,interpersonal functions and textual functions in this discourse and to assist the Chinese to English whispering simultaneous interpreting strategy to some extent.There are four parts in this report.Part one introduces the research background,purpose and significance.Part two is interpreting practise description.Part three is to analyze the discourse characteristics with Halliday's functional stylistics,find its metafunctions presentation and then assist the interpreting strategy.Part four is the conclusion.
