In pre-Qin period, Rite became the pattern that is the synthesis of "Rite,Humanity and Law". Such a pattern had basically stipulated the developing directionof traditional theory of Rite in China. So, this text mainly pays close attention to thewhole Rite in the pre-Qin period and especially lays particular emphasis on theinherent logic among Rite in Zhou Dynasty, Confucius' Theory Of Rite and Xun Zi'sTheory Of Rite, including the developing reason,content and historical inevitability.There are three main developments of theory of Rite in the pre-Qin period. InZhou Dynasty, Zhou Gong carried on the transformation to the traditional Rite, givingthe preliminary contents of "Virtue"and "Punishment",which opened the direction tothe ethical and legal norms. But Rite in Zhou Dynasty was still in chaos. In the Springand Autumn period, Confucius added "Humanity"into Rite. Then Rite included theethical content, which had represented ethical strength for later ages. In the WarringStates period, Xun Zi put the "Law "into Rite. Then there were legal contents in Rite.At that time there was a pattern that contained "Rite, Humanity and Law "finally. Inthis course, the development of Rite in the pre-Qin period embodied inherentdemands which Rite perfected itself constantly and it adapted to the constantdevelopment of the society. From then on, the controlling mode which was thesynthesis of "Rite, Humanity and Law"in the pre-Qin period was adopted bysuccessive dynasties basically and had produced enormous function on the ancientsociety of China. Except the trace of history, the spirit of development of Rite in thepre-Qin period and the understanding of the morality and the law are valuable for usto structure the contemporary harmonious society.There are four chapters in this text. Chapter One is "First Development Of Rite:Zhou Gong Added Virtue and Punishment Into Rite", which investigates socialcharacteristics of Rite in Zhou Dynasty, the development and the defect of Rite.Chapter Two is "The Second Development Of Rite: Confucius Added Humanity IntoRite", which investigates the development of Rite in Zhou Dynasty, main content,meaning and its defect. Chapter Three is "The Third Development Of Rite: Xun ZiAdded Law Into Rite", which investigates the development of Rite, its main contentand meaning.
