Objective This paper's purpose is to explore the roles that mood states and personality traits play in the processing of emotion-congruent information across different cognitive tasks, and to test three conceptual frameworks. Method Adopt experiment and questionnaires to collect data and analyze them with SPSS 11.5. Result (1) the study proves that there exist the trait-congruency effects; subjects preferentially process emotional stimuli that are congruent in emotional ton with stable personality traits. (2) In the natural situation, we cannot prove the mood-congruency effect, however, in the man-made situation, individuals better learn and remember material consistent with their induced mood state. (3) In the natural situation, personality traits influence mood states, but there is no evidences that natural mood states can influence the processing of emotional information; in the man-made situation, the study results are consist with the moderation approach and the mediation approach. The moderation approach suggests mood-congruency effects depend on individual differences in emotional personality traits. The mediation approach suggests personality traits predispose individual to experience certain moods states, which then influence emotional processing.
