In this age of diverse development of graphic design, expressing tradition with modern technique, and yet maintaining ones native cultural flavor is fast becoming a trend. Japanese designer, mastering in incorporating modern with traditional design form, native and international ideology, had gain respect from around the world. Being a close neighbor with similar culture, development of Japanese design form is valuable to Chinese designer. However, blind imitation should not. Although with great culture similarity, certain levels of differences prevail between the two nations. This thesis compares the differences in graphic design style between the two countries, exploring experiences from their Japanese counterpart, to provide a platform of reference to enhance the appreciation and understanding of our own graphic design.Exploring from different point of view, this thesis deduct its point from traditional graphic and modern design example.Besides from introduction and conclusion, Chapter 2 through 5 describes the main points of the thesis. In chapter two, the differences in design appreciation between the two nations, from aesthetics point ofview, are categorized into four groups, namely, motion versus stillness, magnificence versus subtlety, delight versus grief, and complexity versus simplicity.Chapter 3 analyzes from the two nation's style of traditional graphic design and design form. Decorative graphic is the principle of traditional Chinese graphic design, which is bright, emphasizing on natural silhouette and shapes and curvature lines, filled with substance, capturing the rhythm of motion and rich in emotion. While Japanese traditional graphic design is clean, emphasizing on stillness, simplicity in coloring and shapes, filled with straight lines and more rational.Referring to design pieces, representation of each nation's modern native work, each has their individual characteristics, the different style and its appreciation is explored in chapter 4.Analyzing from both native and international point of view, Chinese traditional graphic share common interest complexity and delight with postmodern graphic design. Comparatively, Japanese traditional graphic is closer to modernism graphic design in term simplicity in design work format and rationality.Post war Japanese designer chooses modernism, balancing their native characteristic with current trend. As Chinese's traditional graphic style is not exactly similar to that of their Japanese counterpart, Japanese designer's method of integrating traditional and modem design is notexactly suitable for Chinese design, not worthy of copy. However the ideology of incorporating native and international style, tradition with modern is worth learning.
