Aesthetic Research On The Indeterminacy Of Western Avant-garde Music

Western avant-garde music has left colorful markings in the 20th century's musical history. As for this article, it particularly refers to a series of music genre born around the year of 1945. The esthetics research I conducted is mainly on the indeterminacy character of musical forms in this period.This in-depth research laid in aesthetic level has incorporated both basic technic and format of avant-garde music. First, based on related musical works, I analyzed many musical elements within as pitch, time, etc, to identify the realization of the indeterminacy in avant-garde music. Built on its result, from the angle of avant-garde theory, post-modern culture theory, consumption culture, I tried to dig out the in-depth aesthetic connotation of this indeterminacy characteristic in Western avant-garde musicAnalyzed from the view point of social function and creating desirability, indeterminacy posses the properties of an artwork, in spit that it lacks the property of integrality and closing off in the traditional consideration. From the most direct sense of aesthetic, the avant-garde music works with the characteristic of indeterminacy have an extreme individualized tendency, hard to generalize the intuitionistic feelings of the audiences, though they are unified in their unpredictability. Getting into the bottom of their creating theory, the avant-garde music not only has been influenced by the World War II, also Western music conception and modern humanism impelled it to break away from the restriction of conventional theory, to pave a new, anti-sense way and form a brand new musical structure. At the same time, compared with other fields of art of that period, this indeterminacy characteristic not only lies in music but is also prevalent in visual art and other domains. All these types of arts penetrate through each other, influence on one another, thus affirm such characteristic's significance and research value in avant-garde art. Besides conducting esthetics research based on both format and technic from real music pieces, this article differs from general literature which all took up a simply negative attitude towards this indeterminacy characteristic in its social cultural evaluation, as it dug out the inner conflict from the angle of mechanical reproduction, to further studied the reason for such art's eclipse and its influence on aftertime. Also this article evaluates the social cultural importance of this indeterminacy as an aesthetic characteristic using dialectic method, thus affirms the positive significance of such creating theory.
