Abstract: In this period people's reading behavior has changedsubstantially, including reading subject, reading body and readingmotivation. So it becomes an important task to improve citizen's visualliteracy.Firstly this article discriminates some confusing concepts,such as information literacy, media literacy and so on. Because visualliteracy is a new concept, it's necessary to define it.In the second part, the research deals with some theories,including Phenomenology Theory, Semiotics Theory, Gestalt PsychologyTheory and Multiple Intelligence Theory.Then the article outlines the development tract of visualliteracy. From the history we can get beneficial inspiration.In the fourth part the author elaborates the concept of visualliteracy. On the one hand the thesis falls it into three layers: perceptionlayer, understanding layer and application layer. On the other hand itdiscusses visual thinking, visual communication and visual learning.The research discourses upon the reading of movie and television.Because they have the strong visual characteristic, it's natural todiscuss them. In the fifth part I discuss them from macroscopic aspectand microcosmic aspect. In the macroscopic aspect the text talks aboutNarrative Theory, Depth Psychology and Ideology. In the microcosmicaspect it narrates every single element from the art and technology.
