In the context of globalization in the 20th century, Chinese female literature has been influenced by a multitude of cultural facts. The female ego, with it contemporaneity evolving from tradition, has been divided with the impact from inner tension and external stipulations. The modern female literature in China, the cultural vehicle of Chinese women's lives, serves well as a mirror in which we can see clearly the confrontations between Western culture and Eastern culture, the conflicts between modern and traditional values, and women's struggling in modern times for self realization. Women literature is pursuing its advances through its dialogues with the man-centered culture.This thesis, adopting a psychological approach to the analysis of the text of Xu Xiao-bin's novels, delves into the spiritual depth and social values of Chinese women in a social discourse of multiplying values. The researches reveal evolvement logic and regularity of female ego's division, women's self-liberation, and female struggling for self-realization. After finding the living dilemma and worries of women as modern mankind, the historical reformation of female consciousness, and the effect of modern human society on human spirit are explored in this paper.This thesis is composed of four parts. Exploring into the depth of Xu Xiao-bin's novels, the first part deals with the partite female world, which assumes three forms are as follows : the cleavage between female's free consciousness andsocial rules ,the, cleavage between female's sexuality and their cultural personality, and the cleavage between female's evils and consanguinity. On the basis of the illustration of the three kinds of cleavages, the external and internal causes leading to the division of female ego are fully expounded. The second partThe second part of this paper is a discussion of how women in difficulty find their way of self-rescuing by escaping to religious holy sites, primitive human in habitats, and natural sexual activities. The escape, however, all turns out to be temporary, and they have to return to reality when their dreams become bubbles.The third part deals with Xu Xiao-bin's writing rhetoric—dream description and metaphoric narration, which make his novels allegoriesThe fourth part is an analysis of Xu Xiao-bin's lives, exploring the causes leading to the division of female ego, self-rescuing, and female consciousness of struggling. The analysis draws a clear picture of Xu Xiao-bin's persistence in her feminism, female cultural stand and woman-centered values, which is distinctive in modern China.To sum up, Xu Xiao-bin's novels are typical of deep concern for the spirit of modern human beings, are characteristic of her profound humanity, and futuristic senses embodied in her description of contemporary lives in China. Consequently, her writing has become unusually distinctive in contemporary female Chinese literature.
