The preliminary urbanization is as to the whole urbanization process. At this stage, urban population is more centralized, cities run up and expand on the quantity and scale, urban roles in economy and the society are obviously strengthened. It is the basic stage that can't be exceeded in urbanization process.The preliminary urbanization of U.S.A expanded from the northeast to the Midwest. The development of the western cities and eastern cities were uneven. But according to the different stages of history, the urbanization in the northeast, west and south had distinct features and demonstrated characteristics of diversity.This text acknowledges the utility of the early industrialization in American preliminary urbanization, but does not regard American early industrialization as the thread of the preliminary urbanization. This text attempts to use such theories as historical materialism of Marxism and urban economics, and regards commerce, finance and transportation as the focal point of study to prove the three have played very important roles in the preliminary urbanization process.Commercial economy plays a basic role in the upgrading process of urban economy. During the course of establishment and development of cities, a lot of cities in the northeast and west transformed from the commercial cities that have followed the old patterns. The change of the commercial operation way has an important impact on the development of cities. The privileged strata who emerged from businessmen leaded the development of cities.Finance is a form of value function in the modern urban economy.
