| Ever since 20th century, human beings have been facing a lot of predicaments, for instance, environmental pollution, population problem, mass destruction weapon, nucleus wars, and clone peoples, etc. At the contemporary era with gradually developed science, the recognition of people to science and the function of science occurs two kinds of completely opposite views, and they are scientism and anti-scientism. Scientism uses the view of science supreme and almighty science to arm people, scientific methods to require people, and scientific standards to judge people. However, anti-scientism is totally opposite to scientism and it uses the deficiencies of science and technique themselves and the following negative effect to deny the functions of science and technique, as well as the truth of science, and then deny the value of science and technique.This paper traces back to the source of science, and rearranges the definition and meaning of science. It points out that science is developing, so it is impossible to form an overall and widely accepted definition. However, this does not mean that we can't reveal the characteristics of science. Science has its own characteristics and rules, and they can be summarized as a kind of knowledge system and research activity of cognizing world, and also a kind of power to reform nature and a sort of society organizational structure.
