From the end of 19th century to the beginning of 20th century, the aestheticinclination was gradually turning to the internal from the external in the westernliterature. Therefore, Stefan Zweig, a writer from Austria, was widely paid attention toby the readers and critics because of his delicate psychological depiction. Combiningrealism with modernism perfectly, he undoubtedly is a writer with various productions,of which the depiction of psychology, Judah complex, the spirit of humanitarianismand so on stands out. What made him unique is that he exerted himself to express thecharacters'spiritual passion in his novels, about which critics at home gave littleremarks. And moreover, all of these remarks were mainly appreciation of his certainwork or analysis of some passion reflected in his works. Therefore, on the whole,studies and remarks on Zweig are yet lack of in-depth theoretical and holisticgeneralization. Here the depiction of spiritual passion based on Zweig's works willbe transversely analyzed and longitudinally compared, so that we can have anobjective and overall interpretation on his production. This thesis falls into three parts.Chapter I: Passion——the mystic energy of life. This part inquires whyZweig's novels paid special attention to his characters'spiritual passion from thewriter's life experience and his personality, and also from the influence of Freud'spsychoanalysis. He was obsessed with the literature and art as a boy, and during theFirst World War, he was appealing to peace. At last he committed suicide with hiswife despairingly. These facts show that Zweig is a passionate writer. Beinginfluenced by Freud, the unconsciousness of psychological structure and the id of thepersonality structure were expressed during his depiction on irrational passion in hisworks.Chapter II: Producing mechanism of spiritual passion.
