The Han Dynasty Stone-carved Picture is a kind of stone inscription using formortuary rites, which was engraved on architectures such as coffin chambers,ancestral halls and tomb statues. It had been created in the middle of the WesternHan Dynasty, developed rapidly at the end of this time, and reached its greatprosperity in the middle of Eastern Han Dynasty. The Stone-carved Picture could befound in an extremely large area and mainly divided into four wide ranges: the firstrange includes Shandong Province, the northern part of Jiangsu Province and AnhuiProvince, the eastern part of Henan Province; the second range includes the southernpart of Henan Province, the northern part of Hubei Province; the third range includesthe northern part of Shanxi Province and the northwestern part of Shanxi Province;the fourth range includes Sichuan Province, Chongqing City and the northern part ofYunnan Province. In this vast region, Shandong is one of the places which hasunearthed multitudinously this kind of historical relic. That is because of thedeveloped economy, the culture and unique natural conditions in Qilu Area in HanDynasty, and the changes of the funeral custom caused by the elaborate funeralcarried out by the Han Dynasty. Because of the peasant war at the end of EasternHan Dynasty and the Shabby funeral view rised in WeiJin Time, the Stone-carvedPicture losed its social environment and ideology foundation, then withdrawed fromthe historical stage gradually.The decorated tomb, ancestral halls and tomb statues in Shandong Provinceplay an important role in the study of funeral custome in Han danasty in Qilu area. inShandong Province has experienced a long developing process. According to thedifference of grave construction, the carving technique and the content, The HanDynasty Stone-carved Picture is divided into three development phases: the firststage from the early of Western Han Dynasty to the end of this time; the second stagefrom Xin dynasty to the early of Eastern Han Dynasty;the third stage is the middleand late of Eastern Han Dynasty. Among them , the middle and late of Eastern HanDynasty is its prosperous time. The decorated tomb in Yinan and Anqiu of this timebe called the representative works.
