As an important excavated document, the carved stone can precisely reflects many features of the language and Chinese characters of a certain period. The carved stone of the Sui Dynasty plays a vital role in the history. During the Sui Dynasty, the regular script has started to be used while the official script still has been used in some aspects. However, the carved stone preserves this feature very well. We choose 303 carved stones, including 294 epitaphs and 9 Buddhism statues and tablet inscriptions in which take the epitaph as the principal thing. The significant material offers a meaningful paleographic and philological value to discuss the final pattern of the Chinese characters.Predecessors have done many researches on the regular script of the Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties and the Dang Dynasty while they pay less attention to the regular script of carved stone of the Sui Dynasty. Besides, little people do the cohort study of the carved stone of the Sui Dynasty. According to this deficiency, this paper, based on the font style, mainly describes the regular script of carved stone of the Sui Dynasty, and makes a conclusion on the features of the writing and formation of this period. In addition, this paper also proves the development and evolution rule of the Chinese characters.The materials of this paper mainly are based on the carved stone of the Renshou and Daye period of the Sui Dynasty(AD601-617) from the Research of Sui Epitaph and Beijing Library Stone Carvings of Chinese Past Dynasties Calligraphy Assemble and Research. In accordance with Yupian, Model of Written by Yanjian, Workbook for Imperial Examination and Shuowenjiezi, the writer confirms the standard font style, as the searching suffix. Followed by the variants, the writer excludes the repetitive fonts, in this way the writer finally makes the database. Based on the database, the writer researches the carved stone of the Sui Dynasty from the respect of the conformation, which can’t be separated without diachronic research. By making the diachronic comparison between the Glyph Table of Han, Wei, Sui, Tang, Six Dynasties and the Five Dynasties and the Shuowenjiezi, the writer makes effort to do systematic study and accurate position by connecting the diachronic research and synchronic research.The paper is divided into four parts. The first part is the introduction, illustrating the study object, the source of materials and the terms, instructing the research conditions of regular character and its variants, and finally describing the research approach, research significance, research method and procedure, the principle of selecting material. The second part is the reorganization and emendation of caving characters and inspects the characters without explanation. The third part analyzes the writing conditions of the regular script of the Sui Dynasty, taking the official script, the regular script and the running as examples, based on the cases. The forth part analyzes the typical component of the variants of the regular script and its rule, like assimilation, dissimilation, tokenization and neogenesis. The last part makes a conclusion about the achievements and disadvantages of this research.
