Geographically, Yun'ao Town locates within the Chaoshan Area in geography, nevertheless many characteristics of its phonological system are quite similar with Southern Fujian Dialect, the most distinct characteristics of which are the consonant final endings [-n/-t], 7 tone classes and tone value, much closer to Southern Fujian Dialect. Through comparative research of Yun'ao Dialect, Shantou Dialect and Xiamen Dialect, we can reach the conclusion that Yun'ao Dialect of the Nan'ao Island belongs to Southern Fujian Dialect, which demonstrates the tendency of combination of Southern Fujian Dialect with Chaoshan Dialect, largely under the influence of Nan'ao County seat Houzhai Dialect.After briefly introducing the cultural and geographic circumstance of Nan'ao Island and Yun'ao Town, this thesis is designed to describe the phonological system of Yun'ao Dialect in detailed way. Through analysis of the consonants, vowels and tones of Yun'ao Dialect, the author went on to explore the mixture of the pronunciation of the written language and the spoken language by referring to with Guang Yun that recorded the situation of the medieval period. In light of which, the author clarified the similarities and differences between Yun'ao Dialect, Shantou Dialect, and Xiamen Dialect. Lastly, the thesis again pointed out the specialities of phonological system of Yun'ao Dialect, along with reviewing of the course of its formation.In another word, this thesis aims to shed new light on the trails of the shaping, variation and development of Southern Min Dialect in Eastern Guangdong Province, thereby contributing to the research of the dialectal history and the history of Chinese phonetics.
