With the advancement and development of technology, globalization has become a disputable fact and existence. One direct influence of globalization is the more frequent contacts between different ethnic or cultural groups. Although some people argue that the influence of globalization on culture will be the same as the influence on economy, that is to say, global culture tends to be homogeneous. However, as manifested by history, differences of cultures, which have led to many clashes or conflicts, could not be eradicated. Therefore, in the era of globalization, how to cope with these cultural conflicts has become the focus of culture study. This thesis is an attempt to offer multiculturalism as conceptual guidance to help people correctly confront cultural problems in the process of globalization. Multiculturalism came up as an immigration theory, and in essence, it is to deal with social problems caused by immigration. Comparing with other immigration theories such as assimilation, melting pot, multiculturalism is in accord with the need of modern multicultural countries. Multiculturalism is based on accepting differences of cultures, advocating equality, tolerance, and respect, and meanwhile, it promotes cultural communication and integration. So there is important significance to understand multiculturalism and its roles under the trend of globalization. In order to better understand multiculturalism, this thesis takes Canada as an example, and explicitly analyzes its causes, development and contributions to Canada. The current situation of the world is just like that of an immigrant country. Due to the development of communication, transportation, immigrants or migrants in the world are increasingly frequent. Thus, multiculturalism helps people's awareness of their own culture; helps to protect the diversity of world cultural heritage; helps to accelerate the exchange and progress of different cultures; helps to oppose cultural hegemonism; helps people to respect each other and achieve a win of the whole world. In the end, the author also brings forward cultural strategies of China under the influence of globalization. The concept of multiculturalism should be applied so as to maintain an independent, powerful country.
