"Celebrities In North Jiangsu" And The Modern Economy Development In Haizhou Area

From the end of 19^th century to the early of 20^th century, China faced crisis both at home and abroad. Among the various thoughts, the notion of rescuing the country by developing industry and commerce had a great influence on a special class of feudal officials — the gentries. thus greatly promoting the modernization of China. Shen Yunpei and Xu Dinglin in Haizhou were two typical representatives of these pioneers. They made great contributions to the local economic growth by developing industry and commerce.This paper mainly uses the theories and methods of history as analyzing tools and studies Shen Yunpei and Xu Dinglin as well as their activities in the grand national and international background. They developed the industry and commerce of Haizhou mainly in three ways: sole investment, partnership between them or with other people.
