With the development of text linguistics, more and more scholars have applied its achievements to the research of practice and theory of translation. The scope of text linguistics involves various aspects of research, in which textual coherence is an important one with wide concern. Since the latter part of last century, scholars at home and abroad have carried out valuable research on the factors influencing the coherence of text. How to apply the achievements of textual coherence to translation research is undoubtedly a worthwhile topic, which is discussed in this paper.Chapter 1 introduces the achievements of research of textual coherence at home and abroad. The founder of Systemic-functional Grammar (SFG) M.A.K. Halliday is the early scholar' who initiated the cohesion and coherence of text. His theory was misunderstood and criticized by many scholars. On the basis of foreign research, domestic scholars divide the factors influencing textual coherence into internal and external ones and made detailed studies.Chapter 2 introduces the translation theories, including the functional equivalence theory of Nida and the text function and text categorization theory of Newmark. The author also discusses the unit of translation and how to achieve coherence in translation.Chapter 3 analyzes the influence of context of SFG in thereestablishment of coherence in translation with emphasis laid on context of situation. The author respectively discusses the influence of three variables of register on textual coherence and how to reestablish them in the TL text and thereby reproduce the three metafunctions.Chapter 4 discusses the thematic structure and thematic progression and their influence on coherence, which should be taken into consideration in the process of translation.
