Cantonese is commonly used in Kuala Lumpur, the national capital of Malaysia. This Cantonese dialect has its origin in the sixteen districts of Guang Fu and the sixteen districts of Zhao Fu which are all in the province of Guang Dong. The present-day Cantonese used by Kuala Lumpurians is similar to that spoken by the native people of Guang Dong. But it has a marked difference in that it is mixed with a substantial amount of loan words from the Malay language. After more than a hundred years of social interaction, the Cantonese people in Kuala Lumpur have since adopted more than two hundred Malay loan words. This thesis attempts, based on collected material, to describe fully the various aspects of the Malay loan words and to distinctly classify them according to phonology.Another aim of this thesis is to establish the rules governing the corresponding sound changes that arise in the long process of assimilation, thus supplying a source of reliable material for related study.
