This thesis is an experimental study intended to find out whether the English reading ability of Chinese adult learners can be improved by bridging the gap in culturally loaded words between English and Chinese in teaching English reading at Communist Party School in China.Vocabulary is the base unit to make up a language and also the carrier of the culture. Different nations have different cultures behind their languages. Reading is a quite complex cognitive process, which not only involves language knowledge and skills but is also affected by many non-language factors. The differences between English and Chinese culturally loaded words are likely to affect Chinese adult learners of English to comprehend English articles correctly. English and Chinese people have accumulated their own particular customs, historical backgrounds, religious and social systems, and so on, these must have resulted in forming culturally loaded words in their different languages.
