The ideas about the law of sufficient reason can be traced back to the ancient Greece. At that time, the main emphasis was laid on the study of the cause-and-effect relationship. At the beginning of the 18th century, Leibnitz proposed the principle of sufficient reason based on the ideas of the former scholars. And the basic idea of the law of sufficient reason is that everything has its reason. Or just as Heidegger said "everything has its own reason to exist". The law of sufficient reason has an effect upon the western philosophy since advanced by Leibnietz.Later, the follower of Liebnietz, Wolf carried forward his idea and the law of sufficient reason was absorbed into the traditional logic system as a basic rule. And this greatly extended its influence upon the formal logic. However, this aroused a heated discussion in China on whether the law of sufficient reason is the basic rule in traditional formal logic. Some people hold the positive view while the others not. Those two groups of people do not agree with each other so that this becomes a controversial problem in the domain of logic. The author will analyze the problems related and probe into the meaning and function of the law of sufficient reason.
