American culture diplomacy had a great function as the establishment of Sino—American diplomatic relations; and it greatly affected the developing process of Chinese society. However, studying on this field in the academic circles is not full enough to give up the studies on this field. We make sure that studying on culture diplomacy will contribute to expand to comprehend the definition of traditional diplomacies, in order to enable our country to construct an omni-directional and multiple-dimensional system of diplomacy. Analysis of culture diplomacy is made as follows:Making clear of the definition, characteristics and functions of culture diplomacy is placed in Chapter One. Culture defines the conception of culture diplomacy from the levers of the Political Philosophy, Political Culture and Ideology, which serves as the start of logical analysis and the carrier of culture diplomacy.Chapter Two focuses on the historical background of American culture diplomatic strategy shaped after war II. There is the emphasis on the inevitability of American culture diplomacy toward China. That is to say, culture diplomacy, which became the breach of "unfreezing" of Sino--American relations, has more distinctive function than other traditional diplomacies.Chapter Three studies the main contents and expressions of American culture diplomacy toward China in 1970s.
