Buddhism, an essential part of traditional Chinese culture, exerts a great influence upon the various aspects of Chinese social life, and naturally and necessarily is one of research objects of social studies. Public issues of Chan School are the model literatures documenting Chen masters' successful experiences of meditation on and understanding of the truth, hence classical and authoritative. Many scholars have published a myriad of works on Buddhism and made numerous achievements. In linguistic field, the studies primarily focus on the influence upon Chinese language, but the ones viewing the Buddhist language itself as research object are sparse and fragmentary. In recent years, although tentative researches have been launched by some scholars, they are mainly descriptive as far as methodology is concerned, and emphases are put on the Buddhist linguistic views which is described from the origin, tenets and purposes of Buddhism.According to Professor Fang Litian (2001), the Chinese Buddhism studies mainly go through three stages, that is, historical, philosophical and cultural. From the standpoint of history, the studies concentrate on ( i )sorting out the Buddhist documents and scriptures, including editing, annotating and expounding the development of Buddhism; and ( ii ) compiling history of Buddhism, and dwelling upon the relationship between Buddhism and Chinese politics, economy, culture and so on.From the philosophical point of view, the studies engage in ( i ) analyzing the essential intrinsic properties of Buddhist thoughts employing the rationales and methods of historical materialism; ( ii) dealing with Buddhist ethnics; and (iii) discussing Buddhist aesthetics.From the cultural perspective, the studies focus on the influence exerted over Chinese literature, art and aesthetics. Buddhism exerts a far-reaching influence upon Chinese poetry theory and literary creation.In the field of pragmatics, Professor Qian Guanlian (1997) initially discovers that linguistic behaviors in the public issues convey more than the literal meaning while exploring Chinese cultural pragmatics and views public issues as a research object of pragmatics.
