In the Qi region two famous collections of stories appeared. One was YawYangEssays, written by Duan ChengShi in the Tang Dynasty.The other was LiaoZhaiZhiYi,written by Po Song-Ling in the Qing Dynasty. Why the two works both appeared inthe Qi region? There must be some relations between the two books. In thisdissertation I will contrast them in four respects and pose explanations of thesimilarities.The first respect is that the two works contain different types in literary forms.It's first meaning is that the two works consisted of four different types: legendarystories, stories of note, essays and notes. The second meaning is that many differentliterary types were inserted into the works and so the works had the characteristics ofother types. The characteristics of YawYang Essays were not mature while the types inLiaoZhaiZhiYi were in complete harmony. The reason for the differences is that thepurposes of writing were different. Duan ChengShi wrote for fun but Po Song-Lingfound sustenance in his writing.The second respect is that the ways of Po Song-Ling's collecting materials weresimilar to those of Duan ChengShi's. The two works had both oral sources and writtensources and some stories of LiaoZhaiZhiYi came from YawYang Essays. DuanChengShi only took note of what he had heard and read while Po Song-Ling polishedwhat he had heard and read. The reason for this difference is also that the purposes ofwriting were different.The third respect is that the two works were in pursuit of take note of strangematters. Both stories of note and legendary stories showed this feature. Strange peopleand strange things were in stories of note. Queer artistic figures and winding plotsappeared in legendary stories. Furthermore, works in LiaoZhaiZhiYi were in higherdevelopment than those in YawYang Essays.The forth respect is that Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism had effect on the...
