Cultural default is defined as the absence of relevant background knowledge shared by the writer and his intended readers. This thesis aims to discuss the influence of cultural default on the coherent interpretation in translation and the practical approaches.Chapter 1 is an introduction. The significance of the research is pointed out. Chapter 2 deals with the mechanism and communication value of cultural default in terms of schema theory. Chapter 3 concerns the classifications of cultural default on grammatical level and on cultural level. Chapter 4 endeavors to discuss the two principles for the translation of cultural default. In chapter 5, four translation methods concerning with cultural default as well as the pertinence, advantages and disadvantages of each are summed up.A conclusion can be drawn that the translating methods applied to the cultural default are indispensable and supplementary to each other with the method of "literal translation with notes" as the primary and the other methods as secondary. How to remove the communication barrier because of cultural default and facilitate the ways to make default cultural elements into TL culture by translation activity are the final aims of the discussion of this thesis as well.
