Language is a communication tool used for expressing thoughts, feelings, and intents through systems of arbitrary signals, such as vocal sounds or written symbols. These systems include rules for combining constituent components, like words, phonemes, and morphemes, and are used by distinct communities. Language is a highly social phenomenon. Due to differences in educational background, social class, ethnicity, geographic location, and other contexts, individuals speak differently even though they may technically use the same prescribed language. This language variation also exists between genders. Over the last few years, many studies in fields from anthropology to sociolinguistics have demonstrated that men and women utilize language differently.Gender language is dictated both by cultural gender roles and by predominant national culture. With the mixing of cultures and languages in modern times, there is no doubt that communication can be very complicated and difficult. What are the gender language differences between English and Chinese? How do cultures and societies affect gender languages? As we enter a global economic era, these cross-cultural and cross-gender issues have increasingly drawn scholars' attention. In recent years, anthropologists, ethnolinguists and sociolinguists have carried out many studies in this field. The results stemming from this research can help people to understand better the gender language differences in various cultures, which will improve the quality of communication.Referencing various sources, the author contrastively discusses the similarities and differences of gender language in English and Chinese from the traditional perspective. Both languages are discussed with respect to phonology, vocabulary, syntax, pragmatics, lexicon, semantics, discourse, etc. In addition, the author alsosystematically analyzes the possible causes of sexism in both English and Chinese cultures from the perspectives of biology, psychology, and sociology. The author's intention in conducting this research is to help people to develop an awareness of gender language differences in different cultures. The author also hopes that some of these findings may benefit English teachers in changing their teaching styles. Ultimately, it is hoped that human beings can communicate more effectively and understand each other better across genders and cultures.
