English language, to some extent, reflects a sexist society, and at the same time, it can enable us to see the social reality more clearly. Linguistic directions of degrading and devaluing female can be located everywhere. This thesis tries to investigate linguistic sexism against women in English vocabulary, grammar, and the gender stereotyping in discourses. The purpose is to disclose the common features of English language that suggest cultural biases and socially unjust attitudes towards women. The study will help us to have a better understanding of the relationship between language and society. This thesis totally involves one introduction and five chapters. In the introduction, the main argument point is introduced: language is a mirror of the society, and it conveys the social prejudices toward women. Linguistic connotations are sometimes sexist, in so far as it demeans, denies women and relegates women to a subordinate or inferior position; Language itself is not sexist, but it helps construct sexism in the society. The first chapter involves the definition of sexist language, and the present controversies over the existence of sexist language; Literature review is made here too. In the second chapter, a lot of firm and illustrative examples and evidence are provided to prove the argument point, ranging from English vocabulary, and grammar to some English language domains. Chapter three goes into the explanations of English sexism from the socio-cultural perspectives. Chapter four explores the strategies to achieve linguistic equality, including the linguistic approaches and the social efforts. The last chapter concludes the thesis in suggesting that it is not so easy to eliminate English sexism, which has been deeply rooted in the society. In essence, to reform sexist language in English means to change the social attitudes toward women. Social change should be the basis for linguistic change. So finally the author calls for the society to give men and women equal chances in work and at home, to make the society a little more just for both men and women.
