Kazuo ishiguro s iatest novel Never Let Me Go is infused with elements of Science Fiction and is involved with the heated debate of Clones. As for the novel itself, most critical opinions concentrate on the failure of the protagonists consciousness of rebellion or escaping. Some reviews question the very authenticity of the plots and don't think it convincing. These opinions can be reduced to the failure to understand "freedom" in the novel. Taking off the coat of scientific elements, the novel mainly explores the existence of modern people from the perspective of a clone. By disclosing the inescapable tragedy and the relative freedom of human life, the novel discusses the courage to search for free existence in a floating world and discusses the meaning of human life. Existentialism is concerned with the condition of man s existence, and Ishiguro himself, though not an existentialist, pays much attention to the existence of modern man in a floating world. Thus the absence of "rebellion" or "escaping is reasonable. Based on the refutation of the opinions of those critics, this thesis analyses Never Let Me Go from the philosophical angle of existentialism, it is divided into five parts. The first part is a brief introduction to the author and the research purpose and background. Critical opinions are also introduced in this part, in the second part, there is an analysis of the critical opinions. The thesis pointsout that those critical opinions are based on misunderstanding ot "treedom in the novel, the third part tocuses on the metaphysical understanding ot the novel and explores the inescapability ot human being s tragic life. By employing the elements ot popular science tiction, Kazuo lshiguro tries to state that man s treedom is relative because man has to be restricted by some power beyond control. During the lite journey, human being cannot be tree trom death and loss of innocence. In the fourth part, there is a discussion ot the meaning of human life in the novel, that is, how people try to make sense ot their relative treedom and how they demonstrate their existence. Although life is full of inescapability, a man s lite can be self-created if he can make sensible choices by will within the restricted situation. Existentialism sees freedom of choice as the most important fact of human existence.Attempts at the study of Kazuo lshiguro have been made from different starting-points, but existential elements in his works, so far as i know, have not been paid enough attention to in the studies. This study intends to fill that gap and strike up a new conversation in that direction.
