English is becoming a global lingua franca. Since it is a worldwide communicative instrument, great light should be shed on its oral form. Due to the extreme differences between English and Chinese which belong to two different language systems, English learners in the special Chinese context will meet tremendous obstacles in mastering speaking skill. The obstacles are: the demand on their speaking skill is overshadowed by the ability to use grammar;their affective factors and personality traits are neglected with too much emphasis on cognitive factors;also their teacher's being unaware of his or her own personality, behavior and image may exert unfavorable influence on them.Fortunately, during the recent years, great changes have taken place in these aspects. During the 1970s, many eminent western linguists, such as Gardner, Lambert, Strong, Ellis, etc. began to take learners' individual factors including personality into account when they analyzed what affected learners' foreign language learning. Especially, for the first time Jung introduced the important personality trait—introversion/extroversion into language teaching area. Under this influence, the researches on personality (introversion and extroversion) are not deficient any more in China. The famous advocators are Wu Yi'an, Liu Runqing, Wen Qiufang and so on. However, since they adopt different methods in collecting and assessing the data in different circumstances, there's no unique conclusion drawn to the relationship between the personality trait and learners' language achievements. Also rare researches have been done to discover the connection between foreign language speaking skill and personality. We cannot be overwhelmed by the satisfaction that the education focus has been transferred to the learners. Teacher's factors on foreign language teaching can't be ignored. Actually speaking, personality, behavior and image of a foreign language teacher deeply influence the students because he/she is the major source of information for them in the Chinese environment. Just because of this enlightenment, the idea of the present research on the commensurate relationshipbetween T's (teacher's) and Ss' (students') personality flashes over the author's mind. This thesis attempts to explore the effects left by the interaction between T and Ss with the same or different personality type in oral English class. The research is carried out in No.l Middle School of Ningxiang, Changsha. All the English teachers and some of the students in Grade3 help with the research. Questionnaires are delivered to the teachers and students respectively to test their personality trait and obtain some specific information. Qualitative and quantitative methods are adopted in this research to explore the effects on students' oral English development when their personality (introversion/extroversion) matches or mismatches with their English teacher's. After careful analysis of the results, the author gives some suggestions on how to make Ss' and T's personality best integrate in order to improve learners' English speaking ability to the greatest extent.
