The methodology of humanistic psychology has developed for decades of years. It is undeniable that humanistic psychology has made great contributions in opposing the natural science research pattern of traditional psychology, but theses contributions have been underestimated due to its incompleteness and immaturance . It also resulted in the limited research scope and achievement. Being aware of these shortcomings, the humanistic psychologists advocate to develop the new approaches, among which, the heuristic approach is an original one. The paper systematically introduces the resources and inspirations of the heuristic approaches, and its basic concepts, research design and methodology as well. It also distinguishes the approach with the science methodology and the early humanistic methodology. Heuristic approach is a process that begins with self-search or self-discovery during which The researchers seek to illuminate or analyze introspectively, meditatively, and reflectively into its nature and meaning, and help them understand the complicated and ingrained experience of the subjects. The approach aims at the life experience, phenomenon and meaning of the experience. All the problems it formulates are involved in the life experience. Its study aims at constructing the life experience of different people. With the understanding and application of this approach, it can help us to overcome the negative effects of the life and lead us to a bright and positive future. However, its longer research period, particular emphasis on the subjective experience and limitation in discovering the current and group patterns of certain psychological phenomenon make it an improvement or perfection for the early methodology of the humanistic psychology. Due to its limitations, it cannot cover all the research fields of psychology, which leads to its failure to match the scientific research methodology. Thus, it cannot be the universal research pattern for the psychology.
