Research On Chinese Teaching Of The Missionary Schools Of China In Modern Times

The branches of the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of Christianity founded most of missionary schools of China in modern times. Though they gradually aroused the scholars' attention in recent years for their especial action in culture exchange between China and foreign countries, it is still lack on research of their Chinese teaching. This article focuses on Chinese teaching of different degrees in missionary schools. It includes:1. A brief exposition on the historical background of the arrival of west missionaries and the foundation of missionary schools2. A detailed exposition on the content of Chinese teaching and the course offered.In this part, I will pay more attention to introduce the content of Chinese teaching and the course offered at all levels and kinds missionary schools. Then I will expound the principles of teaching, teaching method and examination system.3. An evaluation on Chinese teaching of the missionary schools of China in Modern Times.In the course of doing missionary work, the missionary schools had to offer the course of Chinese in order to reduce the hate that existed in the heart of Chinese intellectual and common people and to let it easy to propagate the Christian religion in China. This stands for an allowance policy. As a result, a great deal of missionaries who devote themselves to study Chinese language and culture and introduce Chinese classical books to the west. The culture exchange was strengthened at the same time.
